Exercise and pain: Discomfort, "Good Pain" and knowing when to stop?
Exercise is very, very important. You can notice the difference when you don't exercise versus when you do it. To get the most benefit of the exercise, you should embrace the discomfort and pain that comes with it.
And no one can deny the fact that sometimes it can hurt.
For people who stop working out at the first sign of discomfort, they'd probably never do any exercise at all.
So when it comes to keeping fit, when do you tell yourself to stop griping and keep going — and when should you rest?
Discomfort versus pain
It is crucial to distinguish between "pain" and "discomfort" when practicing sweating, says Carly Ryan, an exercise physiology scientist at Exercise and Sports Science Australia.
"Effort and discomfort go together, and that's what most people describe as good pain - you generally expect to feel some discomfort," explains Ms. Ryan.
"If the pain becomes actual - burning, stabbing, or sharp - this is not a good sign and should stop."
Dr. Nathan Johnson, associate professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Sydney, says that while the discomfort of feeling "Fatigue" during exercise is a normal reaction, the acute pain associated with injury or illness is not.
And Dr. Johnson says: "If you feel pain in the joints, muscles, bones, or anything associated with chest pain, this is an indication that you will stop exercising immediately."
Knowing the difference
Mrs. Ryan and Dr. Johnson agree that the easiest way to tell if you feel pain or discomfort is to stop exercising.
"A little bit of a burn that disappears when your muscles stop working are often just the result of an exercise, so it's OK to keep going," says Ryan.
"But if it continues and you're experiencing, for example, severe pain in your knees or painful hamstring pain that affects your ability to continue to move, then it is probably pain because you have crossed it, so you need to stop."
